Notable or Promotional

In searching for a different article at WP, I accidentally stumbled on this page: Maine Public Employees Retirement System. With several non-links, no references or sources, is this a notable subject or mere promotional? It obviously has a serious COI. Maineartists (talk) 00:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you. I've just deleted it. Is the subject notable, or was its treatment merely promotional? Well, who cares? It didn't have the aroma of an authentic Wikipedia article. I therefore copied a distinctive string of words from it, and fed this to Google, which immediately found it both in the Wikipedia article and in this page. I added "copyright violation" to a list of crimes noted by another user, and got rid of it. When you come across something like this, first look to see if it's a copyright violation: if it is, then there's no arguing over its value. -- Hoary (talk) 07:05, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

I note, Tshisusu, that the question immediately above is the sole edit by this username to English-language Wikipedia so far, and that the wording of your question suggests unfamiliarity with the Wikipedia of any language. So, the first step is to find some Wikipedia articles that are defective in some way -- an easy task, as defective articles are very numerous -- and, by scrupulously using and citing reliable sources, to improve those articles. Linking Books in References?

If a book listed in a reference has a Wikipedia article about it (in this case No Man Knows My History), should the occurance in the reference be linked? Assume the book is not mentioned in the article other than in the reference.Naraht (talk) 13:49, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Uploading a new version of a picture file

I'm trying to update the picture "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Logo_for_SC_United_Bantams_(PDL_franchise).jpg#file". The club uses a different logo now. I've uploaded the new file and updated the source URL, but it still shows the old picture on the page and the page that references the file. I've tried googling how to fix this, looked through the help desk archives, and the Wikipedia tutorials and haven't found anything that helps. Can someone please help me with this? We have articles here, not pages. You should not be directly attempting to create an article(which new accounts can't do anyway), but you may submit a draft article via Articles for Creation.

Ppv0323 I would click publish, then when you are prevented from the edit, remove a piece of your draft and try again, until you get an edit through, then you can narrow down the problem. (edit conflict) @331dot: That message is MediaWiki:Abusefilter-disallowed and the standard message when an edit fitler is set to disallow. I cannot see what specificially caused the abuse filter that disallowed to activate, since the responsible filter is private, however, the edit itself can still be seen in the public log from a different, also activated filter. @Ppv0323: For future note, false positive reports of edit fitlers go to Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports. Was told my Article for Creation was "Blatant Advertising"

Frankly, if that is your idea of being 'neutral', then no, I doubt that you will be able to do anything to get an article approved. And given both the contents of the draft, and your username, you evidently need to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Mistakes happen. Errors are sometimes caused by inappropriate changes of valid code which is no longer there so I often look for the origin instead of merely fixing the current code. "Find addition/removal" in the page history finds [2] by R Prazeres. The whole caption was added in that edit and it was just a mistake with nothing more revealed. Removing an old logo from Wiki commons

Asking for review of the Translated page of an existing Wiki page

I have been trying to translate in English the Marcelle Pardé page which was originally created in French (I am one of the primary contributors to that specific page). The system did not allow me to publish my translation because of my Wiki status and I could only save that draft under my personal Wiki account. How do I submit it for review so it can be published and tweaked using Wiki source code? I could not see that "ask for review" option nor could I see how to togle the translation page from text to Wiki code (in insert footnotes for example). New Ownership of Business

Hi Wikipedia Help Desk, the owners have changed at : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bicycle_Hotel_%26_Casino/ business was acquired by new owners in 2022. Courtesy link: The Bicycle Hotel & Casino [your coding didn't quite work, it's easiest to just copy and past the title from the article page].

It would not be a good idea to have two separate articles for the same establishment. One course of action would be to WP:Move the article to the new name (you can't edit page names in the same way as other text), leaving a WP:Redirect under the old name (because many people will search for that): if done properly, this will preserve the history of the original article, which is required.

I see the logo is uploaded to en.Wikipedia directly under the Non-free use rationale – you can upload the new logo in the same way and replace the old one with the new.

I assume you have no personal connection to the business. If you do, you need to look at WP:Paid and WP:COI, and comply with those policies as necessary (this is mandatory). Hope this helps. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 5.64.160.67 (talk) 19:54, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

@Sandeekim: If you are associated with the business (and I assume you are due to your use of the pronoun "we"), then you should refrain from making edits to the article yourself. Propose them on the talk page instead. You can upload a new logo and add it, change spelling, and other minor things, but if you want anything more substantive than that, you should propose it on the talk page. You can preface your proposal with the tag {{request edit}} to indicate your conflict of interest and cause your proposal to be listed on a category page that is monitored by some editors. ~Anachronist (talk) 20:04, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

Doubt

Good evening. How can I tell if the person who wrote the paragraph in the article meant "Astana Arena opened in 2009" or "Astana Arena, opened in 2009"? The problem is as follows: the person who wrote the article may have forgotten to add the comma. Without the comma, the sentence "Astana Arena opened in 2009" needs the MOS:CAPTIONS, while with the comma it does not need the MOS:CAPTIONS. How can I understand this? JackkBrown, probably the best way to find out what somebody meant when they wrote something is to identify the edit in which that "something" was added, identify the editor, and ask the editor on the editor's talk page. Just as you cannot read other editors' minds, other people here at the "help desk" also cannot read other editors' minds. -- Hoary (talk) 23:34, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

Another approach is to say that it doesn't matter what another editor meant: you have as much right as that other editor to decide what the paragraph says. If you think it isn't clear, reword it. If you are not sure what it is saying, look at the source and see what it says (and if one is not cited, find one and cite it), and reword accordingly. ColinFine (talk) 09:03, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

@JackkBrown: Looking at the article in question, Astana#Sport, the caption is for a photograph of the Astana Arena. "Astana Arena" will suffice on its own, because it describes what the picture is. It is my preferred caption for this picture as any subsidiary information, such as its opening date, should be in the article text. It might have the date the picture was taken added, as has been done for the "Barys Arena in 2015" picture below it.

Adding an extra snippet of information, as in "Astana Arena, opened in 2009", is fine with a comma: the additional text simply describes a property of the subject, although it would be better in the article text as stated above.

@Michael D. Turnbull, @JackkBrown: Looking on my Android phone, neither the Wikipedia app nor viewing in a browser's "mobile" version shows any of these three images with a border. Furthermore, the "thumb" version doesn't have the usual surrounding "frame", caption and "enlarge" icon. The "desktop" version in a browser is fine. How do I translate a German article to English? I believe that you need to create an account, change your preferences to Deutsch German and then Save the article to your documents.

What you are actually asking is how to create an article in English Wikipedia whose content happens to be based on an article in another Wikipedia. This is not much different from creating any other article in English Wikipedia, and you are responsible for making sure your work meets all the criteria for references, notability etc (the original article may meet these, or it may not, as standards are not the same in different Wikipedias. I believe that German Wikipedia has quite high standards though, so it may do). You must also (according to the terms of the licence) attribute where the material has come from. So I was interested in uploading the logo of a school and was wondering how I would seeing as I have the logo and it is on their webpage and other social media but I cant seem to find who created it or if it is under any license currently. Ah, from my guess, it looks like the school probably requested a website from Pearson, who in turn used Wix.com to create the website. @SkyWolf369 Yes, in principle, but if I were them I wouldn't want to do so since for Commons you need a CC BY SA license, which among other things means anyone can use the logo for any purpose including commercial purposes (provided they acknowledge its source). As for your question, the cover of a journal will be copyright, so can only be used under a claim of "fair use" which is not applicable to draft articles. As you have a conflict of interest, and in fact are almost certainly classed by Wikipedia as a paid editor, you must make a formal declaration of that fact (see that link). Then you should not edit the article Taim directly, but should instead make edit requests on the the article's talk page.

But please note that Wikipedia is not interested in what you want to say about your restaurant, but only in what independent sources have reported about it. Your logo can almost certainly be updated, your locations possibly, provided a source unconnected with you writes about them (not just something regurgitating a press release); but what you serve is not encyclopaedic unless an independent source, unprompted by you, has written about it. Btdellis2729, if there is a more descriptive photo for Devante Adams, and it is Creative Commons compatible, then you can upload it and change the image. See commons:COM:LICENSE for a description of what would be acceptable. Most random images online are not acceptable, but photos you took yourself are. I think the guidance is not iron-clad on cases like that, but the spirit of the guideline is "don't use full stops for sentence fragments". My response would probably be to rewrite the caption as either a single sentence fragment with no full stop or a full sentence ended with a period. You could do "Orestes at Delphi": painting of two naked males, ca. 330 BC or The painting "Orestes at Delphi", which depicts two naked males, was created ca. 330 BC. Not quite what I was saying but I don't totally disagree. Here's my hierarchy of preferences:

1. Rewrite so no full stop is needed: "Orestes at Delphi": painting of two naked males, ca. 330 BC
2. Rewrite with full sentence(s) and full stop(s): The painting "Orestes at Delphi", which depicts two naked males, was created ca. 330 BC.
3. Violate the spirit of MOS:CAPTION, where doing otherwise is maybe impossible or awkward: "Orestes at Delphi". Painting of two naked males, ca. 330 BC.
4. Violate both the spirit and the letter of MOS:CAPTION (note the lack of a final full stop): "Orestes at Delphi". Painting of two naked males, ca. 330 BC

A glance at the website suggests that its content is money, gossip, and tits. Adding references to it doesn't obviously benefit the readers of Wikipedia; there's a suspicion that you're adding them in order to benefit statsfact.com. Hi Wakelamp. This may not answer your question, but FYI, neither of those links are ideal in a Wikipedia article. Per Wikipedia:Newspapers.com, we prefer to clip the articles and link the clip url. Assuming you want the Transformers review, you could use this link, which allows everyone to see a lower quality clipping of the piece.
